OKAVANGO DELTA
The Delta is a succession of lagoons, islands
and islets of various sizes, open grasslands and flooded plains
in a mosaic of land and water. Palms and towering trees abound,
throwing their shade over crystal pools, forest glades and grassy
knolls. Here indeed is a part of Africa relatively unspoiled by
modern man.
Fishing, bird watching, game viewing, photography
or simple relaxation; indulging in any of these in the Okavango
are experiences without parallel and there are outlets that specialize
in all or any of these pursuits. Birds and wildlife are thought
to draw the biggest number of visitors and it is probably the
former for which the Delta is rightly most famous More than 350
bird species are to be found throughout the Delta. Here in the
Delta you can certainly expect to see impala, kudu, zebra, wildebeest,
buffalo, giraffe and elephant as well as a host of other animals.
The Delta has the full range of predators including Wild Dog.
Visitors to the Okavango will usually arrive
by air in Maun and will almost certainly have onward bookings
to one of the fishing or safari camps. Very few of these camps
can be reached by road and, where they can, it is usually impractical
as it is too time consuming. Virtually every visitor, then, will
be flying by light aircraft, from Maun to the Delta camp of their
choice.
CHOBE NATIONAL
PARK
This park covers a wide variety of country;
riverine forest, flood-plain, periodic marsh, Mopane and Miombo
woodland and a few rocky outcrops . Such a diversity of habitats
implies a wide variety of wildlife which ranges from water animals
like hippo, crocodile, otter and fish to forest and dry-land species
such as elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and eland. In all areas
predators abound, including lion, leopard, cheetah and both species
of hyena. Chobe is elephant country at its finest. Their numbers
are variously estimated to range between 35,000 and 65,000. Chobe
is also known for its magnificent bird viewing as there are over
400 different species in the Chobe National Park.
