Tanzania lies to the south of Kenya
and, like its neighbors, offers splendid opportunities for wildlife
observation. Tanzania is an extremely varied country. The north
and south are dominated by highlands, the center of the country
being lower lying. The east is bounded by the Indian Ocean, the
coast being considerably less developed than that of Kenya. Tanzania
boasts Africa's highest mountain, Mt.
Kilimanjaro (19,340 feet) and borders the continent's largest
lake, Lake Victoria, in the north.
Tanzania also boasts what is arguably the
most famous wildlife area in the world. The Serengeti
National Park, which is contiguous with the Masai
Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, is populated with hundreds of
thousands of Wildebeest and Zebras during certain times of the
year. The Serengeti also has some of the densest populations of
predators, such as Lions, Cheetahs and Hyenas.
Like Kenya, Tanzania has considerable archaeological
interest, containing some of the earliest remains of man's ancestors.
Olduvai Gorge and the fossil humanoid footprints at Laetoli are
powerful indicators that East Africa was the birthplace of man.
